Dr. Maria Montessori

Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was the first woman to receive a medical degree in Italy. Through her research and observation of children, Dr. Montessori developed a method of education which has achieved over 75 years of success with children throughout the world. The following will briefly acquaint you with the Montessori method of education. The method developed by Dr. Montessori is essentially based on a practical ethic and a reverence for children. The Montessori method can be divided into four essential elements:

• A carefully structured classroom (the prepared environment)
• The famous didactic materials exclusive to Montessori
• Well trained teachers
• A philosophy and pedagogy that respects the intelligence of children

Curriculum Overview

Casa/Preschool — 2 1/2 to 5 years
Elementary Grades — Grades 1-8

The Casa level is the starting point for a Montessori education involving children from 2 1/2 to 5 years of age. At the age of 6, students proceed to our elementary level at which time increasingly abstract concepts are investigated. Our carefully designed curriculum includes phonics, math, science, computer classes, music, art and french. In addition, our weekly gym program includes gymnastics, horseback riding, skating, soccer, swimming and tennis. Our curriculum is tailored to meet the needs and abilities of the individual student. This individualized approach to learning motivates students to meet attainable goals and to recognize the relevance of their efforts. Time is given for the student to succeed with an area of study or concept before moving onto the next, thus ensuring the student’s intellectual growth throughout the educational process. We set goals and expectations in which students:

• enjoy their school experience
• work and think independently
• develop positive work habits
• develop collaborative social and learning skills
• develop motivation to accept challenging academic tasks
